Camping can be a fun adventure, but many families are still using cumbersome and ineffective coolers to keep their food cold. Coolers have a lot of faults, and unless campers are ready to hunt and gather, a weekend’s worth of meals can go bad overnight. And, if you are off to a weekend or month-long adventure, the last thing you want is to be left without sustenance. Sourcing one of the best portable fridges for camping and outdoors will give you a place to safely and conveniently store your food.
What Makes a Great Camping Fridge?
The type of fridge that you choose will depend on various factors. Things like the number of mouths to feed and whether you want to freeze foods should be things that you consider when selecting a product. - Capacity: Your storage needs will be different whether you are planning a weekend for 2 or for a larger group. We find a 30–40-liter capacity is ideal for smaller families of 2-3 people (If you’re planning a longer trip, plan for a larger capacity). Minifridges under 20-liters are just too tiny to fit anything more than grapes and a couple bottles of water. This is especially important if you will be in the wilderness and away from shops. However, groups of 4-6 people will need a larger fridge for prepared camp meals, meats, and eggs. When planning a larger gathering, 70-90 liters will be your best bet.
- Power: Most portable refrigerator/freezers run on 12 Volts of energy. Which is perfect for using within a car or RV setting. However, some also come with AC adapters to be used in a standard outlet. Additionally, a model with a ‘low battery setting’ will keep your generator, car, or RV battery from draining.
- Temperature Monitoring: Ideally, a refrigerator will allow adjustment and monitoring of the internal temperature from an interface. This is especially ideal for cooling medication, proteins, and dairy.
- Insulation: A good refrigerator unit will be well insulated against cold leakage. However, some models of purchasing an insulated cover to further protect your unit. An insulated cover will help cut down on the amount of energy your fridge uses to operate.
- Dual Zone/Compartments: Many portable refrigerators have two compartments to separate a cooler section from foods that need to be frozen. Most of these options will use ‘trickle cooling’ which allows cooled air from the freezer section to spill over into the refrigerator section. However, there are several models with flexible temperature control over both sections.

Not only that, but this feature is a nod to the fridge’s insulation and performance you can expect throughout the trip. The ICECO can come to the desired temperature within the first 30 minutes of operation.
Which, in our opinion, out performs throwing ice into a cooler.
Additionally, we found this unit to be one of the most reliable in terms of keeping dual zones for separate freezing.
Built To Withstand a Tough Adventure
Secondly, the durability of this fridge is beyond amazing. For instance, impact-resistant caps prevent the corners from damage from inevitable impacts along the road.
However, most impressive is how this unit resist shocks and tilt. As a result, the ICECO fridge can still operate on rough roads and on 40º angles. Which is where a lot of its competitors fail. So, if you’re heading up hill or parking on a slope, be sure to choose a fridge that can take it.
The fridge is made from tough materials that will withstand any challenge that outdoor life throws at it which makes it perfect for more demanding adventures.
Variable Functions
Finally, the ICECO fridge features a few handy modes that add to its functionality.

Next up is our favorite the budget-minded. What impressed us most about the Alpicool APLT60 63 Qt is how compact it is for all that it offers. But that doesn’t mean to say that it lacks storage space. For the price, this fridge is still 63 quarts and offers loads of convenient functions.
Plenty of Storage Space
Despite the compact outward appearance of this ridge, there is a decent amount of room inside. With enough space to store up to 75 cans of soda (12oz), you certainly won’t be pushed for space.
However, you aren’t likely just toting soda. A campsite chef will expect to stash loads of proteins, fruits and vegetables.
And, the APLT60 is completely capable of holding several days worth of meals with 63 quarts of space.
Temperature Control
Whether you want to freeze steaks and ice cream or simply chill drinks, the vast selection of temperatures makes this fridge very diverse.
However, campers can choose to have different temperatures on either side of the unit. Either side can be controlled from -4ºF to 68ºF. So, one side can be controlled separately for maximum efficiency, which makes campsite chefs extra happy.
We found that for the price, this fridge is surprisingly reliable in in its dual zone operation.

Here we have another amazing option for camping. Our favorite option for small gatherings and short trips is the Bodega 38 Qt Dual Zone.
If you are looking for something energy efficient, you won’t go wrong with the Bodega.

In modern times, is there anything more convenient than having a smartphone app to help operate a device? The Bodega has a compatible app that lets you control the fridge on the go. Easy peasy!
So, if you’re on the road and forget to turn down the temp, you can do this from the front seat without a pitstop. Or, if you’re at camp and want to conserve battery, campers can control the unit from within their tent.
Dual Temperature Control
When you are camping, you may have the need to keep some foods cooler than others. With the dual temperature zones, this is entirely possible with the Bodega fridge.
Each side can be independently controlled for precise cooling. However, this is a spill-over system, so the freezer side will begin cooling first. Regardless, users can expect to control either side from-4ºF to 68ºF.
Alternatively, you can remove the central divide and have one, larger area with a consistent temperature; this is definitely a versatile appliance.
Easy To Transport
In addition to being easy to use, the Bodega refrigerator is easy to move around or down from the trunk. This model comes on wheels so moving it over rough terrain or up slopes is much easier.
However, we feel that it really could use more of a retractable handle on the side opposite its wheels. Being that this unit is 42.2 lbs when empty, this could get quite heavy to drag over a long distance while your back is bent.
Regardless, the Bodega comes with handles on either side, which is the preferred method of carrying when heavy. Find a friend and get that food to camp.

Another great addition to camp is the Dometic CFX3 75 L. We love this refrigerator for its huge capacity of 75 liters, and energy saving double door design.
This is an ideal unit for larger groups and longer adventures.
Loads of Add-ons
First, and most obvious, is Dometic’s attention to detail on their units.
Not only does this fridge come with an easy user interface, campers will find loads of extras. For instance, an easy-to-use app makes checking the units operation simple from the front seat or from camp.
Dometic also offers a sliding bracket system for their refrigerators. Here, campers can easily slide the fridge from their trunk to effortlessly view foods while standing behind the vehicle. However, this does mean that you’ll have to install the unit semi-permanently into your car’s interior.
And, with the Dometic CFX3 power supply will be absolutely no problem. The unit comes with both 12/24V and 120V connections. However, you’re not limited to a wall plug or car adaptor. Dometic also sells a lithium ion battery separately if you’d like to go off grid for a while.
Ample Capacity
Additionally, the Dometic refrigerator offers an outstanding amount of space with almost 75 liters, which is around 79 quarts capacity.
And it’s not only large, it’s also deep. This unit easily stores 2-liter bottles in an upright position. Which means almost no limitations to what you can stuff inside.
Great Air Distribution
Finally, this fridge performs like a charm. We’ve found that many less expensive fridges are unable to evenly distribute cold air throughout. However, the updated Dometic system utilizes a fully wrapped evaporator.
Essentially, this draws hot air out while the refrigeration unit cools. Because this unit utilizes this along the entire perimeter, food will cool quicker and you won’t have hot spots in the unit.
We’ve found this to make this fridge really feel like a luxury, and it really is top of the line.

5. ARB ZERO 73 Qt Fridge w/ Bluetooth
Next up is another favorite for large gatherings. The sheer size of the ARB ZERO 73 Qt Fridge w/ Bluetooth jumps out at you from the moment you lay eyes on it. This is a seriously large portable fridge that can hold impressive amounts of food and drink.
Massive Size
With a 73 quart capacity, campers are able to store food and drink for a much lengthier camping trip. There is enough room to keep up to 108 cans of soda.
However, we love that the freezer section is kept a bit smaller and can even be removed completely to make one enormous refrigerator.
Very Durable Construction
The outer part of this cooler is crafted with robust steel. And, we love the corner mouldings that help keep the fridge stable. Not only that, it only takes one good smash or drop on a cheaper fridge to destroy an edge.
We find that that is a quick way to ensure you’ll never again have a good seal. However, the Arb Zero is truly built to last many years and many hauls.

Separate Cooling Zones
If you need both freezing and chilling, then the option to alter the temperature in each compartment is available and reliable. What’s more, if you have some foods that need to be at an ambient temperature, there is the option to switch individual zones off entirely.
Additionally, the ARB Zero offers the deepest freezing temperatures available. The unit has the option to go as low as -7.6ºF.

Finally, we have the versatle Whynter FM-85G 85 Qt w/ True Freezer. We found this unit to boast a very generous temperature range, giving you the option to store a variety of foods.
And, with its fast and deep freezing settings, campers can get on the road quickly with confidence.
Large Capacity
First and foremost, for its lightweight construction of 52.2 lbs, the Whynter FM-85G has loads of storage. This fridge is great for bigger groups of campers, such as families who need something that will store a lot of food and drink.
With a giant 85 quart capacity, you won’t ever be short on space to store your favorite treats. Additionally, there are also two removable baskets to increase space and organization.
However, this unit is only able to be utilizes as a refrigerator or a freezer and can not be both simultaneously. That being said, this would be fantastic for those who don’t need to pack ice cream or frozen treats for the haul.

Before Picking Your Camping Fridge
While there are many options out there, not all will be suitable for every camper. Before heading out into the wild with a fridge, we use the following criteria to help us choose a model. Consider refrigerators that offer:
